I wished a little, but honestly
To wake up in a free India
Sailing on united waters
Absorbing peace from soil
I wished a little, but honestly
To walk on pious roads
Washed off bloodshed
Rinsing under sun of brotherhood
I wished a little, but honestly
To eat with less Richie-Rich
Sitting on a hand-woven cot
Spinning my own strength of Khadi
I wished a little, but honestly
To nap under a village tree
My hands on Gita’s everlasting light
Carried me to the Dandi
I wished a little, but honestly
To have my favorite goat milk
A reminder of my mother Putlibai
And of Mother Earth’s greatness
I wished a little, but honestly
To light a small lamp on a grey evening
As the darkness in the fields faded
The farmers still in glory
I wished a little, but honestly
To sleep on a white pillow
From which if I would wake up
I would return to a New India.
