Lord Lothian wrote a letter to Gandhiji and expressed his wish to spend some time with him. Gandhiji could have met him in Bombay, but to have him a feel of real India. Gandhiji invited him to Sevagram. He came here in the summer of 1940. From Wardha he travelled in a bullock cart to Sevagram. As he said at the time of his departure, he had spent three days of his stay in the Ashram with full peace. Never before had he experienced that quiet and peace in his life. It was a unique experience.
