Five Day Course on Revisiting Gandhi
7th to 11th May, 2018

Organizers: Department of History, K. C. College, in collaboration with Sevagram Collective (a group of individuals and organizations involved in initiating and running the Gandhi-150 Abhiyan), is organizing a five day course on M.K. Gandhi in the sesquicentennial year of Gandhi and Kasturba.

Background: Gandhi was a constantly evolving person. He made immense contributions to so many fields, that it is difficult to even keep a track of the same. His own writings run into thousands of pages, while what others wrote about him is more voluminous. Hence any person trying to study him is faced with several questions - How to track the changes in his personality and thinking through this immense literature? How to demarcate the various phases in his thinking and reach his final thinking about a given topic? Several people have got entangled in the web of these questions, finally resulting in their misreading and misunderstanding of the Mahatma as the orthodox, casteist Hindu, a stooge of capitalists or a leader who shunned confrontation... something which is very opposite of the true Gandhi.

Today, in the light of these accusations, we need to understand the real Gandhi, what he stood for; understand his evolution as a person and thinker, and finally get to know the basic values which governed his life. In the sesquicentennial year of Gandhi, we need to assess the relevance of his philosophy in the present context.

Resource Person: This course will be conducted by renowned Gandhian scholar Dr. Sudarshan Iyengar. Dr. Iyengar, apart from being a much-acclaimed thinker is also an active practitioner of Gandhi’s philosophy. Dr. Iyengar earned his doctorate in Economics. Presently, he is the Director of Gandhi Research Foundation, Jalgaon. His earlier engagements include Vice-Chancellorship at Gujarat Vidyapith, and Directorship at Centre for Social Studies, Surat. He has published seven books and more than sixty research articles.
