The life and vision
of Mahatma Gandhi
take on operatic form at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. Titled
'Satyagraha', the opera takes Sanskrit verse from the Bhagvad Gita, to
relate the story of Gandhi's life.
The opera, written
three decades ago, is based on Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South
Africa.
American born tenor,
Richard Croft took the role of Mahatma Gandhi, shaved his head, and lost
weight to get into the role.
The opera, composed
by the well known Philip Glass, played previously in London. The stage
is shared by towering giant puppets, and singers who flit in and out in
dream-like sequence. For Croft, the entire performance is meditative.
'Satyagraha'
continues at the New York Metropolitan Opera House till early May.
