UN declares 2nd Oct as
‘INTERNATIONAL NON-VIOLENCE DAY’
In 2007, the United
Nations General Assembly declared 2nd October (Gandhi Jayanti) as an
‘International Day of Non-Violence’. It is a real tribute to the apostle
of Peace. The day is meant to raise awareness of non-violence,
tolerance, full respect for all human rights and fundamental
freedoms for
all, democracy, development, mutual understanding and respect of
diversity through education and public awareness. Today, when electronic
media like T.V., Cinema and video games are making a devious effect on
students’ minds by turning them abnormally hostile, intolerant and
violent; value education has become the need of the hour. Value
Education strives to sustain morality and peaceful conflict resolution.
During this week-long national education
initiative, various activities will demonstrate the positive role young
people can have in making their schools and communities safer. Each day
of the week will focus on a specific nonviolent strategy. These include
promoting respect, tolerance, anger management, resolving conflicts
peacefully, and uniting in action.
