This book describes the story of the experiments in holistic health care initiated by the student group of Medico Friend Circle at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Wardha. It is a journey of 33 years i.e., from 1978 to 2011. The book is divided into five parts.First part portrays the initial growth of Community Health Insurance Scheme. The second part describes the evolution and growth of Health Assurance Scheme. The realisation that people's participation in health care is a myth and the human development requires transcending beyond the tubular vision of health care led to the holistic perspective. Part three explains how the models of development which evolved in the course of time led to the prosperity and material development of villages and the goal of people's organisation can be achieved through various development programmes based on felt needs of the people. However, mere material development led to erosion of social values. The fourth part describes the turning point and traces the process of identification of devoted persons and involving them in constructive programmes life self-reliance in clothing, agriculture and financial matters mainly through the organisation of Self Help Groups of women. The concluding part of the book describes how the Alumni joined hands with this unique experiment in holistic health by generously contributing to the project. The book carries an introduction from the late Dr. Sushila Nayar - the personal physician to Mahatma gandhi and a foreword by Dhiru S. Mehta, President, Kasturba Health Society, Sevagram.
Dr. Ulhas Jajoo, MD (Medicine), is Professor and Head, Department of Medicine, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Wardha. He is one of the founder member of Medico Friend Circle and the in-charge of Health Assurance Scheme of the hospital. Dr. Jajoo's commitment to Gandhian values in health and upliftment of villages is evident from the successful implementation of the programme in villages in and around Sevagram.
